Sportsmanship and rules

Sportsmanship:

The main emphasis this year in both youth and high school sports, including lacrosse, is sportsmanship for coaches, players and spectators. Sportsmanship is defined as qualities and behaviour befitting a sportsman. A sportsman (which includes coaches, players, and spectators) is defined as a person who can take loss or defeat without complaint, or victory without gloating, and who treats his opponents with fairness, generosity, courtesy, etc. REMEMBER, IT'S ONLY A GAME, and the main thing is that everyone comes off the field safely

Rules on Equipment:
As the upcoming 2010 lacrosse season approaches, now is a good time to look over your equipment to make sure that everything is legal and safe.  Check the condition of your:

  • Pads (shoulder, elbow, etc.) and gloves (should have no holes in them!)
  • Helmet (make sure the straps are in good working order, and that the mask is securely on the helmet)
  • Last but not least check your mouthpieces (the new rule for high school lacrosse is that the mouthpiece must be a readily visible color other than white or clear, and must cover both top and bottom teeth).
  • Sticks must be the right sizes.  Short crosses should be between 40 and 42 inches.  Long sticks can measure 52-72 inches (for U13 Junior level play 68" is the max length for a long crosse).  All sticks must have a rubber-butt end on them.  Any strands hanging off the crosshead should be no longer than 6 inchees.
  • Lacrosse head dimensions should not measure less than 6 1/2 inches at the top of the cross head.
  • Also, check sticks for deep pockets.  You can check this by putting the ball in the pocket, and seeing where the ball lies.  If you can see the top of the ball below the bottom of the cross head, then it is considered illegal.

Have a fun and safe lacrosse season, and I'll see you on the field.
